DJ is terminally ill and in the Spring of 2002, was given only 6 months to live. With the help of a very dedicated doctor and the people who love her, DJ is doing better. She continues to have ups and downs, and due to medications being rotated regularly, she suffers from various side affects to them. However, despite small complications and set-backs, she went to mechanic school in 2003 and has set small goals for herself.
High Mountain Riding Adventure, a short story about DJ's horseback riding adventure in the San Diego County mountains with her young cousins, is dedicated to the memory of her horse, "Swiftwind", an Appendix Quarterhorse mare, and DJ, who, when riding Swiftwind, won many awards and rode like the wind!
